© William N. Jennings, ca. 1885-1890, Early lightning photography

To be exact: this isn’t the first photograph of lightning, even though Mr. Jennings thought so. Actually this daguerreotype is said to be the first lightning ever photographed (in 1847).

“Lightning and thunder require time, the light of the stars requires time, deeds require time even after they are done, before they can be seen and heard.” (Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science: with a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs)
